Our home construction and repair work started back in 1994 when Mark Mulligan and a small group of guys got to work using their own money and collecting whatever they could from generous friends and neighbors. When Hurricane Jimena rolled through and stalled over San Carlos leaving behind about 39 inches of rain over a couple of days, our volunteers rebuilt and repaired upwards of 45 homes over the ensuing months. Following that our small but dedicated group continued to build; adding roofs, installing plumbing, septic tanks, bathrooms, doors, and windows and pouring many, many concrete floors. Starting in 2016, the Charles D Trover Family Foundation joined with us and since then the program has been ramped up to the point where we now have a full time crew and we will build up to 8 or 9 new homes each year. Our construction program also includes turning boats and RVs into homes and also installing playground equipment and building recreational facilities.
