FRANCISCA GUTIERREZ
The Perfect Partner in CASTAWAY
KIDS Building Program
One should not do for a child or an adult what they can and should do for
themselves. Giving someone something for nothing can cripple that
persons independence, undermine their will to achieve, block personal
growth, and can even deny them the chance to realize their full potential.
Instead of thinking, growing intellectually, striving to better themselves,
and discovering their own possibilities and potentials, a person can
disintegrate both mentally and physically. Because too much can
sometimes be done, without the recipient participating, the recipient of
altruistic giving can be prevented from discovering the fundamental truth
about life...... the real joy in living lies in the achievement of values--the
acquisition of skills, the pleasure of productive work, the pride in his
power to support his own life......
and the joy is in the doing.
Why would anyone
want to prevent another
human being from
enjoying the experience
of living ?
So CASTAWAY KIDS has adopted the policy, with those we help in the
construction program of building homes for the victims of Hurricane
Jimena, to get the recipient families to be actively involved in the building
of the structures. In this way, not only is a home built, but the folks involved
are given a chance to learn, grow, to better himself, and to realize some
of his potentials and possibilities.....and thus they maintain their feeling of
self-worth and develop confidence in their abilities to support their own
existence.
That's why Francisca Gutierrez was such a
joy to meet and work with in San Jose.
Francisca lost part of her house in the
hurricane. Living in a Shelter Box tent for 4
months with her children, she
whole-heartedly threw herself into the
massive job of clean-up at her own house,
and at the home of her parents across the square in San Jose.
She basically is a "single" mom with four
children raising her children alone while her
husband is in another state working to
provide for the family. Yet Francisca didn't
just "roll over" and whine about the situation,
but jumped right into the project of clean-up
and rebuilding......doing what was needed.
Francisca did not receive a completely new house, for we worked
together with her to enclose what was left of her existing home. The sense
of accomplishment and joy that comes from active participation in
CASTAWAY KIDS rebuilding projects is reflected in Francisca's face and
those of her children Ana Camilia, Gustavo and Luis as they color and do
homework along with two neighbor children after school.
Her other daughter Dariana's satisfaction shines on her beautiful face as
she proudly shows off the bedroom area of their newly restored home.
The government provided beds, dresser,
kitchen table and chairs for Francisca
and other families, along with pots and
pans, plates and silverware. But, we
believe, that Francisca working side by
side with the CASTAWAY KIDS team,
also grew as a person in her
experience. With a grateful heart and joy
she now appreciates what has been done for her.
