Thrift Shop Opens In San Jose
Jose Francisco Diaz Jaime is known to his neighbors as
Panchito. He is also known as the man who saved little
10 year old Tache from drowning in the floodwaters of
Jimena. Tache lives in a house behind the shack where
Panchito was staying. As the river of water rushed through
their neighborhood, Tache's foot became entangled in a
downed barbed wire fence.
Panchito had himself become tangled in the wire and fell on a fence pole,
Panchito rescued him and carried him on his back to his father's waiting arms.
breaking his back.
He was taken to a hospital in Hermosillo and
returned home in a wheelchair only to find his
modest shack demolished by the storm.
Unable to work, neighbors brought prepared
food, and Tache's father made arrangements
for Panchito to stay in his brothers
unoccupied house while he recovers.
At 87, Panchito has worked laying brick and odd jobs every day. He lost his wife
years ago. His only family are the 2 sons he hasn't heard from in years. Last
contact, both were serving in the US military.
Castaway volunteers suggested that a thrift
shop be opened in San Jose to make available
the items contributed for the storm victims.
Clothing, bedding, shoes, etc were brought in
bags for Panchito to sort, hang and display for
sale. Area residents can come to the thrift
shop and buy items for 2-3 pesos. It's great for
the community and an enterprising Panchito
earns a living. He welcomes everyone into his
makeshift shop with a warm smile-
It's neighbors helping neighbors.
