Minutes read from February 2, 2009, meeting. Minutes approved with one
correction. Correction: change US checks to read Castaway Kids, US. Inc.
Correction noted and minutes accepted as read.
Treasurers report: current Mexican account = $70,601.30 pesos
Treasurer to monitor the balance of Banamex account to maintain $1000.00
USD in reserve, (This allows us to defer payment of $200.00 pesos fee).
USD current account = $18,500 USD
Recent donation was received from a US group known as the Mexican
Connection, which is a group of Escapees RV’ers from Idaho.
They donated the amount of $2100.00 USD for the “Adelante Estudiante”
group of Castaway Kids for scholarships.
They also gave an additional amount to the Castaway Kids, for current
projects in the sum of $1000.00 USD. Gracious thanks have been given to
this generous group.
Lenny Atlee has donated $1,500.00 USD for the dune buggy which had been
donated by the Rainwater’s for contribution to the Castaway Kids.
Pay Pal has a balance of $ 1,200.00 USD; this is available at $500.00 USD
on a monthly basis.
Outcomes of the recent Baseball game: The trip on March 6th 2009 with fifty
children from Fatima was a successful event. Through the generous efforts of
Richard Saenz, a consultant of the Diamondbacks; the Castaway Kids were
given seventy-five tickets to the Hermosillo game between the Diamondbacks
and the Mexican All-stars. Two buses were rented with Tufesa giving us two
for the price of one. Dave Schmidtsky, a friend of Mark Mulligan, from Arizona,
gave 52 Diamondback league hats out to the children. Twenty-five
chaperones had a great time and commented the children were well behaved
and all had a good time. Thanks go to all the volunteers and the committee
who did a bang up job! The committee consisted of: Mark Mulligan, Tammi
Miller, Jim Bomberg, Darren Thompson, and Maris Kalmbach
Update on current projects:
Fatima Park: The ramada to cover the playground equipment is in process.
Los Playitas: Progress is slow with need to hire help to complete the floor,
electric, windows and doors prior end of season for the volunteers. The
building must be able to secure prior to leaving. Much discussion ensued re:
this project re: future benefits, and funds needed to complete the project.
Karen Stewart made the motion to provide $4300.00 USD; to complete
project in addition to the previous $1,200.00 USD; allocated. Seconded by
Pete Spencer, vote passed with 20 for and 2 against.
Tammi Miller recommended seeking out resources in the US or Mexico which
will match funds for future projects.
Adelante Estudiante reported they are sending out applications for
scholarships and even grandchildren in the US are sponsoring scholarships
for Castaway Kids. Pre-paid tuitions will be due in August. The $2100.00
USD; funds just received will cover the anticipated scholarship expenses.
Fatima Secondary School is an upcoming project re: groundwork to enable
the children to have a safe playing area. The Castaway Kids have volunteers
that will grade the land and fill where needed to provide a soccer field and
playground. Tammi Miller indicates this project is anticipated for next fall.
Mark Mulligan presented a plaque and thank you gift to Susan Schuaf for her
last 2 ½ years of services as President to the Castaway Kids. Susan has
done an outstanding job and given tremendously to the group with heartfelt
thanks from all.
Mark Mulligan presented the slate of officers for election with an introduction to
Nikki Landon and Jim Breault.
